I often find myself thinking about the possibility that corruption/greed is hardwired into human DNA. I don't want to believe that, but I see it too often in unexpected places. It's depressing.

It’s true, but human beings have the ability to recognize when their behavior is evil and we can make sweeping changes that would empower everyone. History is replete with examples. But that instinct you speak of becomes more intense and is corrupted by greed and the institutional power of those who wield it. That’s why long ago I gave up on the notion of victory in my lifetime. We’re part of a difficult struggle and the odds are against us. John Newton wrote “Amazing Grace” in the 18th Century but never lived to see the end of the colonial slave trading empire. Still, he made a huge contribution and raised awareness. It’s not impossible, but the enemy has so much more capital and technologically sophisticated messaging systems. I mean, just watch Netflix or any streaming service and you’ll see it’s like they’re telling you the world’s just fine now because we vote to respect gender-neutral pronouns, and that’s supposed to excuse genocide? It’s so obvious that I think people are just doubling down on being wrong, too utterly paralyzed by embarrassment, & that it’s all they have left to believe in.
